Tekrema Center for Art and Culture provides training to students ages 3 years old through adult, beginner through professional, utilizing the best practices of dance training. Tekrema places children, ages 3 – 5 years in the Dance Basics program, which lays the foundation for structured dance training. Children 6 – 12 years are offered West African dance, Beginning Ballet and Hip-Hop Jazz. Students 12 -17 years are offered enrollment in West African Dance, Beginning Ballet, Intermediate Ballet, and Hip-Hop Jazz.  Adult dance classes are open to all.

African Dance

Tekrema’s African dance program offers classes in traditional and contemporary African dance, music and folklore. Tekrema’s focus is traditional dance genres from West Africa. Classes are accompanied by live drumming once a month.


Tekrema ballet program provides instruction in the techniques and steps of classical ballet with an emphasis on terminology and correct body alignment. Tekrema’s focus is the development of an aesthetic awareness of the art of classical ballet.  The class includes a warm-up at the barre with center floor work and accombinations.

Hip Hop

Tekrema utilizes the latest hip hop and R & B music mixed with movements that are influenced by our youth. While, Hip Hop is a broad collection of urban dance styles, Tekrema provides a structured method of teaching the various various styles of movement in a fun and supported environment. Each class includes a warm-up, dance combinations and routines, and encourages individual expression and personal style.

Adult Jazz

Jazz dance is New Orleans! We teach movement rooted in the rhythms of African movement and innovative movement. The warm-up develops strength, flexibility, coordination, and dance techniques specific to jazz dance. The class offers dynamic choreography set to jazz and popular music and encourages an perspective of individual expression and development of personal style.

Greer’s SuperClass

Greer’s SuperClass is a dance fitness class that incorporates dance, aerobics, stretching, strength training, and fun into a powerful class of rhythm, soul, and invention. The class is high energy, yet relaxing. It is always inspirational and supportive. Greer’s class playlists are an experience in themselves. Come Dance!


Hatha yoga is the most widely practiced form of yoga in America. It is the branch of yoga which concentrates on physical health and mental well-being. Hatha yoga uses bodily postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation with the goal of bringing about a sound, healthy body and a clear, peaceful mind. There are nearly 200 hatha yoga postures, with hundreds of variations, which work to make the spine supple and to promote circulation in all the organs, glands, and tissues. Hatha yoga postures also stretch and align the body, promoting balance and flexibility. Tekrema’s yoga class is guided, yet focus on the abilities of the individual student. All levels are welcome to yoga.

Tekrema Dance Theatre

Tekrema Dance Theatre is the professional performing entity of Tekrema Center for Art and Culture. Its genre is modern jazz. Dance Forever! is Tekrema Dance Theatre’s annual signature dance event.

Truly reflective of Tekrema’s dedication to its mission, Dance Forever! pays homage to traditional and current African and African Disapora dance traditions.
